Cambridge | Living Costs and Food Survey 2008 (LCF) Atlas
Cambridgeshire County Council
Our latest Cambridgeshire Atlas shows the expenditure and income of 21 Output Area Classification (OAC) groups. Each OAC group represents a distinct section of Cambridgeshire's communities. Data from the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCF) 2008 is presented to get an indication of the spending habits of Cambridgeshire's diverse communities. The LCF, formerly known as the Expenditure and Food Survey is an amalgamation of the Family Expenditure and National Food Surveys. These surveys have been collecting data upon Britain's spending and food consumption since the 1950's. The Office for National Statistics is responsible for overall management of this invaluable supply of economic and social data.
A total of 5271 households took part in the 2008 survey across Great Britain. The Office for National Statistics validate and adjust the data by using weights. They also append the social classification Output Area Classification (OAC) to the data. This helps us to gain a greater knowledge concerning the expenditure of differing sections of our society. The data therefore applies at a national level but the use of OAC allows us to provide local intelligence for the county.
The Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP) system has been used to classify expenditure on the LCF. COICOP is the internationally agreed classification system for reporting household consumption expenditure within National Accounts. Having an international standard classification facilitates greater consistency between countries in the collection and presentation of data.
Under COICOP expenditure is categorised into Living_Costs_and_Food_Survey_2008 twelve headings, for the Cambridgeshire Atlas one category (Alcohol and tobacco) has been divided for more insight. They are listed below:
1. Food & non-alcoholic drinks
2. Alcoholic drinks
3. Tobacco
4. Clothing & footwear
5. Housing (net), fuel & power
6. Household goods & services
7. Health
8. Transport
9. Communication
10. Recreation & culture
11. Education
12. Restaurants & hotels
13. Miscellaneous goods & services

Data Unit Wales
Meeting local community information needs with bilingual microsites
The Local Government Data Unit Wales (the Data Unit) is part of the local government family in Wales. Originally the Data Unit was set up in 2001 to help local authorities and the Welsh Assembly Government use data more effectively so that they are able to understand local priorities and improve the services they provide to the people of Wales. The mission hasn’t changed but the focus is now more on local government.
Meeting the need
To meet the need for an online information system geared to its key personas, the Data Unit launched its national InfoBase service in June 2009 (InfoBaseCymru). Several Welsh local authorities were keen to have their own mini sites based on InfoBaseCymru. The first local site, InfoBaseCaerffili, was therefore launched as a pilot at the same time as InfoBaseCymru, thus creating the InfoBase service.

newhamINFO
London Borough of Newham
This atlas was prepared for the newhamINFO Team of London Borough of Newham to present nationally ranked scores of multiple deprivation at small area level. The report uses our Performance Profile template which is ideal for presenting data of this kind - nationally consistent ranks of multiple domains related to deprivation. The bars of the bullet graph (top right) illustrate how varied the cross-domain profile of deprivation can be at a neighbourhood scale. The background grey bars indicate how areas rank nationally in terms of fifths (quintiles) with bars overlapping the darkest grey sections being classed in the 20% most deprived of all areas nationally.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council - Sandwell Trends
This map shows the neighbourhoods (or Lower Super Output Areas), coloured according to the 2009 Mosaic household groups. Mosaic segments the country's households into fifteen groups (A to O), which can be seen in the map. The spine chart shows the proportion of each group represented within the selected area. By default the Borough profile is displayed. Click an area to change the selection. Double-click to open another.

How was this dynamic report created?
The Area Profile Template was used to create the report which combines a single map, table, spine chart and bar chart for data display. Indicators in the spine chart are arranged vertically in a scrollable list. This chart enables at a glance analysis across a range of indicators for a selected area. It makes the comparison of profiles for different areas quick and easy.
