The Statistical Office of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is responsible for providing the official statistics for the city of Bremen. Its main task is collecting data, processing, evaluation and publication of more than 200 statistics. The data relates to demographic, social, economical and ecological factors. According to Barbara Rosel who works in The Statistical Office, this data is vital for political and planning-related decision making.

“Data and information has to be processed and made available for local planning and administration agencies of the city. To secure local intelligence for the state of Bremen and beyond, we publish the data and information in different formats and offer different ways to access them,” says Barbara.

Mexico’s Data Observatory works alongside the local government, organisations representing citizen’s interests and universities. One of its aims is to communicate data in such a way that it can be understood not only by experts but by the whole population. It had previously been using PDFs to present data but decided it needed to investigate other ways of doing this.

Salomon Gonzalez Arellano is Professor Investigator at the Observatory and faculty member of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana says that one of the drivers for them was to make the data accessible by a wide range of individuals – even to teenagers needing insight for their homework.

The Statistical Office of Stuttgart provides access to a variety of data sets that are used by planning and decision makers to understand social and economic trends within the city. Statistics help them analyse current situations and issues in order to make good decisions for the future.

The Statistical Office currently has about 40 members of staff. We spoke to Michael Haussmann in the Department of Population and Elections. Michael says the department provides important figures and estimates regarding population, finances and social structure. “At the same time, we act as an election authority - we organise all general and council elections in Stuttgart. Our geographic information system is part of the geographical data infrastructure and we use this to visualise the data,” says Michael.

Nottingham Insight is a shared evidence base, providing access to data, information and intelligence about Nottingham and the surrounding areas. The site has been designed to help Nottingham meet its 20-year strategic vision for the city. This vision was developed by One Nottingham in full consultation with a wide range of residents, businesses, community, voluntary and faith groups and public agencies across Nottingham.

Laura Denny, Intelligence Co-ordinator, Nottingham Insight Network, says that getting the website to where it is today has been an iterative process. Nottingham Insight started out as a bespoke GIS application in 2005 which had been built in-house. However, it was taking time to maintain and the way the system was built was constraining future developments. The team had already used InstantAtlas desktop and felt that InstantAtlas server could help them meet their development needs.
